Reform & Renovation

A friend from NYC came back on Christmas holidays.

When I saw her and talked a lot about interesting topics and exchanged each other.

One of them I've heard from is the different meaning of "reform" how Japanese English is used.

She said native English uses "reform" for clothes or change of cabinet, not for the houses as in Japan. It's better used "conversion" for houses.

So we'd better use "conversion" or "renovation" to make renew or repair houses.

reform:

to change to a better state, form, etc.; improve by alteration, substitution, abolition, etc.

to cause (a person) to abandon wrong or evil ways of life or conduct.

to put an end to (abuses, disorders, etc.).

Chemistry. to subject to the process of reforming, as in refining petroleum.

renovation:

to restore to good condition; make new or as if new again; repair.

to reinvigorate; refresh; revive.
